Columbia Basin Cooperative Information System
April 2002
Summary
The Council and the National Marine Fisheries Service recently signed
an agreement to cooperate in developing an
information system for the Columbia River Basin.
Purpose
Improve the quality, quantity, and availability of Columbia River
Basin data and related information on fish, oceans, wildlife, and their
habitats using a publicly supported approach to information systems
development. See this diagram of information
types and likely end users. For more detail, read the methodology.
Process
Your experience with Columbia Basin data will help guide this process
of assessing current information management efforts and identifying future
information needs. Here's how the process will unfold and how you can
participate:
- Over the next 7 to 10 months, the Council, NMFS, and consultants
from Science Applications International Corporation will evaluate
current information systems and assess regional information needs
through interviews, focus groups, presentations, surveys, and
workshops.
- The results of these investigations will be compiled, summarized,
and presented together with recommendations at a basin-wide workshop
where interested parties will have the opportunity to review,
validate, and comment.
- After the workshop, a final report with recommendations will be
prepared.
